Clarity. The one thing manuals need and that most of them lack. Prior to the web, they were actually printed by the millions - and nobody read them. RTM (Read the Manual) or a variation thereof, was the standard that everyone ignored. Until they ran into trouble; and then they called Tech Support. Today most manuals are online, readable with password or completed product registration. And in addition are downloadable .pdf files or CDs. So accessibility isn't a problem anymore. But clarity is still an issue. And it takes a strong editor with technical ability to be able to speak "engineering" and write English. And to provide visuals if necessary. My Industrial Design career, having worked with engineers of many companies, gives me the know how. And writing clearly and succinctly is a trademark of mine. So if you've manual work to do, make sure you do two things - plan for plenty of time, and contact me, you'll be glad you did. Think Watermark. E-mail. |
